Myth Busted, Traveling by Train in India is not hard!!

It is often believed that people in India have a rough time traveling by train in India. Before the early 2000s, there was not much technology to help customers travel. After the boom in the tech-market, a lot of new apps and companies were set up to help people have a comfortable ride on the train. Gone are the days when you had to wait in long queues to just buy a ticket from the station. You can now buy your tickets online; it is that simple.

Indian Railways runs around 13000 trains across the country on a daily basis. With over 120000 km of tracks laid, the Indian Railways is the fourth longest in the world. The Indian Railways has employed over 1.3 million people, making it the largest recruiter in the world. The numbers are so high that the Indian Government has to come up with a separate budget every financial year called the Railway Budget. Tens of thousands of passengers use the railways for their day to day activities.
  1. The first thing you ought to do is decide what kind of seat you want and the source and destination stations. You can then book your tickets either online or through an agent. Once confirmed, your ticket will be given a PNR id and will be in a waiting period if you have chosen a bustling and popular route.
  2. The next thing that you have to do is check your IRCTC seat availability and PNR Status. You need not go to the station or the agent to check this. You could use a designated web platform to check the status of your seat. Once confirmed, you will now get your coach number and seat number.
  3. On your scheduled date and time of departure, reach the source station early. After a security check, head towards your platform. You are advised not to be late since there will generally be a lot of rush. Reach your train, search for your coach and seat, and settle down.
  4. While on the train, in case of an emergency, pull any one of the red chains which are placed in each row of every compartment. The train will come to a halt, and the authorities will come and help you out.
  5. When the TC or the ticket collector arrives, produce your ticket without any hassle. Note that the TC will have to tend to hundreds of passengers, so his tone might not be appeasing.
  6. There are restrooms placed in every compartment. These are cleaned at regular intervals. Ensure you keep the bathrooms and the compartment clean.
  7. There is a pantry coach available on most trains. You can have your tasty food here and pay nominal prices. The Indian Railway sets the fee for all the items available in the pantry.
Enjoy your journey; the Indian Railways wants to ensure that each and every passenger must have a good experience. If you have done your little bit of homework and understood the basics well, then traveling by train in India must be a piece of cake.
